Overview

Why this aircraft matters

The first C-5 flew in 1968. The Reliability Enhancement and Re-engining Program produced the C-5M with new engines, updated avionics and improved performance.

Size and design

The high-mounted wing clears a full-width cargo hold. Nose and rear ramps can open at the same time, enabling vehicles and freight to load from either end.

At 75.3 metres long and 67.89 metres across, the C-5M Super Galaxy occupies a very different physical envelope from an everyday single-aisle airliner. Dimensions alone do not tell the entire story: payload, cabin volume and intended role determine how that space is used.
